  • Why Climate Literacy Belongs in Board and Executive Development

Why Climate Literacy Belongs in Board and Executive Development

Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue — it is a leadership challenge

Boards and executive teams are navigating a world of accelerating climate impacts, changing regulations, shifting investor expectations, supply chain disruptions and growing community scrutiny.

Yet one critical capability is often missing from leadership development programs: climate literacy.

Just as financial literacy enables leaders to understand financial performance, climate literacy enables leaders to understand climate-related risks, opportunities and decisions that shape the future of their organisation.

Climate literacy is not about turning executives into climate scientists. It is about giving decision-makers the confidence and shared understanding they need to lead in a rapidly changing world.

At People For Nature, we believe informed leaders are essential to building a resilient future. Through Climate Fresk, a proven science-based collaborative workshop, we help organisations transform complex climate science into practical understanding — empowering leaders and teams to turn climate risk into meaningful action.

The climate challenge is becoming a business challenge

For many years, climate change was treated primarily as an environmental or sustainability issue. Today, it is increasingly recognised as a strategic issue that affects every organisation.

    Climate-related risks can influence:

    • operational continuity through extreme weather events;
    • supply chain reliability;
    • insurance availability and costs;
    • access to capital and investor confidence;
    • regulatory obligations;
    • workforce expectations and talent attraction;
    • long-term business resilience.

Boards and executives are responsible for making decisions under uncertainty. But meaningful decisions require a shared understanding of the systems driving these changes.

Without climate literacy, leaders risk relying on fragmented information, reactive responses or isolated sustainability initiatives rather than embedding climate considerations into strategy.

Climate literacy is a leadership capability

Effective leadership requires the ability to understand complex systems, identify emerging risks and make informed choices.

Climate literacy helps leaders answer fundamental questions:

    What is driving climate change?
Understanding the science behind greenhouse gas emissions, feedback loops and climate impacts provides a foundation for strategic thinking.

How does climate change affect our organisation?
Leaders need to connect global climate trends with operational, financial and reputational risks.

    What action creates meaningful impact?
Moving beyond awareness requires understanding where organisations can reduce emissions, build resilience and contribute to positive change.

A climate-literate leadership team can move conversations from:

    “What is happening?”

    to:

“What does this mean for our organisation, and what decisions do we need to make?”

The gap between climate awareness and climate action

Many organisations have committed to sustainability goals. Many leaders genuinely want to contribute to solutions.

The challenge is often not motivation — it is shared understanding.

Climate conversations can become complicated by:

    • overwhelming amounts of information;
    • uncertainty about priorities;
    • technical language;
    • competing business pressures;
    • uncertainty about where to start.

This is where participatory learning approaches can make a difference.

Rather than delivering another presentation filled with facts, Climate Fresk brings leaders together to explore the causes and consequences of climate change through a collaborative, evidence-based process.

In just three hours, participants build a shared mental model of the climate system, identify connections between causes and impacts, and begin exploring pathways for action.

Why boards and executives need a shared climate language

Organisations transform when leadership teams align around a common understanding.

Climate literacy enables executives and boards to:

    1. Ask better questions

Climate-literate leaders can challenge assumptions, identify blind spots and engage more effectively with sustainability teams, consultants and stakeholders.

    2. Make better strategic decisions

Understanding climate systems helps leaders integrate climate considerations into investment decisions, risk management and organisational strategy.

    3. Engage teams with confidence

Employees increasingly expect their organisations to take meaningful action. Leaders who understand the challenge can communicate with authenticity and inspire participation.

    4. Move beyond compliance

While regulations and reporting requirements are important, climate leadership is about more than meeting obligations. It is about preparing organisations for the future.

From climate risk to meaningful action

The organisations that thrive in the coming decades will be those that can adapt, innovate and collaborate.

Climate literacy is a foundation for that transition.

At People For Nature, we work with organisations to build climate capability through engaging, science-based learning experiences. Our Climate Fresk workshops help leaders and teams understand the climate challenge, connect the science to their context, and identify opportunities for meaningful action.

Because climate action starts with understanding.

And understanding starts with informed leadership.

Build climate capability in your organisation

People For Nature equips corporate leaders with the climate understanding they need to lead with confidence.

Through Climate Fresk’s proven 3-hour collaborative workshop, we transform complex climate science into shared understanding — enabling leaders and teams to turn climate risk into meaningful action.

  • Our Partnership with GreenScope Productions: Capturing Citizen-Powered Change

Our Partnership with GreenScope Productions: Capturing Citizen-Powered Change

As we build towards Citizen COP Australia 2026, we are proud to highlight our partnership with Green Scope Prod — a collaboration that brings a powerful new dimension to citizen-led climate and biodiversity action: storytelling through film.

In 2025 Green Scope Prod supported People For Nature by documenting our events, capturing not only what happened — but what it felt like. Through their lens, moments of connection, curiosity, and collective action were preserved and shared far beyond the rooms where they took place.

Adding a lens to citizen action

Citizen COP is built on a simple idea: global decisions should be shaped by the people they affect. It is a decentralised, people-powered movement that invites communities across Australia to host their own events alongside global COPs — creating a distributed “Green Zone” grounded in local conversations and action.

But for these conversations to travel, to inspire others, and to create a ripple effect — they need to be seen.

This is where Green Scope Prod plays a vital role.

By documenting Citizen COP and our broader programs, they help amplify citizen voices, making local initiatives visible, accessible, and shareable. Their work transforms ephemeral moments into lasting stories — ensuring that ideas, energy, and insights continue to circulate beyond each event.

    A shared vision

At the heart of this partnership is a shared belief: storytelling is not just about documentation — it is a tool for change.

By combining citizen engagement with visual storytelling, we are helping ensure that the voices, ideas, and solutions emerging from communities are not only heard, but remembered, shared, and built upon.

We are deeply grateful to Green Scope Prod for their support, creativity, and commitment to amplifying citizen-powered change.

Together, we are not only creating spaces for dialogue — we are capturing a movement in motion.

  • Our Partnership with the Queensland Decarbonisation Hub

Our Partnership with the Queensland Decarbonisation Hub

As we reflect on 2025, we are proud to acknowledge and celebrate our partnership with the Queensland Decarbonisation Hub — a collaboration that strengthened the connection between research, industry, policy, and citizen-led climate action.

The Queensland Decarbonisation Hub unites industry, research, and policy to drive the state’s transition to a low-carbon economy. By leveraging evidence-based research from Queensland universities, the Hub supports industries, communities, and government in identifying practical decarbonisation pathways and shaping policies and technology solutions.

Their support of AlterCOP 30 Australia – the Australian AlterCOP Chapter brought to Australia by People For Nature in 2025 – reflects a shared commitment to accelerating climate action across Queensland — grounded in collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and real-world implementation.

We imagined an independent, values-driven gathering running alongside the official United Nations Climate Conference (COP30). Our aim was simple — to create a free and inclusive space where voices often absent from formal negotiations — youth, First Nations leaders, local communities, scientists, artists, and grassroots changemakers — could come together to engage meaningfully with climate and nature action, while actively reducing the environmental footprint of participation itself.

While Australia sent 494 official delegates to COP30, we engaged more than 1,400 people nationwide, extending the spirit of the COP “green zone” through citizen-led events and conversations across the country.

The success of this first experiment helped demonstrate the importance of bridging structured, evidence-based climate work with citizen engagement — ensuring that knowledge does not remain siloed, but becomes part of a shared societal response.

As Dr Liz Young, QLD Decarbonisation Hub shared:

“Last night’s AlterCOP 30 Australia at the Precinct was truly extraordinary, filled with courage, leadership, and a deep generosity of spirit. People For Nature showcased remarkable leadership, shaping an evening marked by respect, curiosity, and connection. The evening’s message was clear: Listen deeply, connect with Country, share knowledge, and act with hope.”

Alongside this partnership, People For Nature focused on citizen engagement, biodiversity literacy, and participatory learning experiences — helping translate complex climate information into accessible formats that inspire understanding and action.

Together, this collaboration helped strengthen the foundation for what has now evolved into Citizen COP Australia — a decentralised, people-powered movement running alongside global COPs in 2026, designed to make climate and biodiversity action more locally grounded, inclusive, and participatory.

We are deeply grateful to the Queensland Decarbonisation Hub for their support in 2025. Their commitment to bridging research and action plays a vital role in shaping Queensland’s transition, and we look forward to continuing to build connections between science, policy, and community.

  • Our Partnership with CO2 Australia

    Our Partnership with CO2 Australia

As we reflect on 2025, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable support of CO2 Australia in the early development and delivery of AlterCOP 30 Australia – the Australian AlterCOP Chapter brought to Australia by People For Nature in 2025

We designed an independent, values-driven gathering running alongside the official United Nations Climate Conference (COP30).

The success of this first experiment, and the lessons it generated, revealed something larger was emerging — not simply an alternative event, but the foundation of a broader civic infrastructure capable of connecting citizen engagement, collective intelligence, and institutional processes in a constructive and ongoing way.

People For Nature decided to evolve into creating its own initiative Citizen COP in 2026, a decentralised, people-powered movement running alongside the global COPs in 2026.

We are inviting citizens, schools, businesses, artists, and local groups across the country to host their own aligned events during the COP period. Rather than one central event, it becomes a nationwide network of local conversations, workshops, and actions — making global negotiations visible and relevant at the community level.

At its heart lies a simple belief: lasting environmental change happens when people feel informed, empowered, and connected — both to the challenges we face and to the solutions we can create together.

CO2 Australia provides practical, science-based solutions at the intersection of business and the environment. With over 20 years’ experience in carbon and biodiversity projects, they help organisations and landholders create real environmental and economic value. Their expertise spans carbon and biodiversity offsets, ecological assessments, spatial analysis, and land management, alongside training programs that build capability across industry and government.

CO2 Australia supported AlterCOP 30 Australia because they believe sustainability and productivity go hand in hand — creating lasting value for people, land, and the planet.

As Chris Wilson, Chief Consulting and Strategy Officer at CO2 Australia shared:

“Events like AlterCOP 30 Australia are vitally important as we look to bridge the gap between those ‘talking’ at the global level, and those who are ‘doing’ locally. At CO2 Australia, we pride ourselves on execution and People for Nature clearly share the same philosophy. Connecting communities, creating shared understanding and then collaborating in service of our planet were clear themes throughout the AlterCOP 30 event.”

Alongside this, People For Nature focused on citizen engagement, biodiversity literacy, and participatory learning experiences — helping translate complex climate information into accessible formats that inspire understanding and action.

We are deeply grateful for CO2 Australia’s support during this formative phase. Partnerships like these are essential in building movements that are credible, inclusive, and capable of driving real change.

As Citizen COP Australia evolves, we carry forward the lessons, relationships, and momentum built in 2025 — and remain committed to expanding this citizen-led approach to climate and biodiversity action.

  • The biggest professional Climate Fresk workshop in Australia – Future Group

The biggest professional Climate Fresk workshop in Australia – Future Group

    Power in numbers

Over the past 150 years, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in Earth’s atmosphere has increased from a relatively stable 280 parts per million (ppm) to a concerning 420 ppm today. 420 ppm is not just a number – it is a key driver behind climate change, leading to devastating environmental consequences that impact everything from ecosystems to weather patterns to economies. The urgency to act has never been clearer. However, in the face of such a monumental challenge, the path forward is not one of isolated efforts but of collective action – of recognising the power in numbers.

This was the core message behind the Climate Fresk workshop organised by Future Group during its annual EOFY summit in Australia.

The workshop brought together over 120 employees from across the company – it was the biggest professional Climate Fresk in Australia.

    Futureproofing a Movement

Future Group (Future Super, SmartMonday, Guild Super, Child Care Super and Verve Super) is on a mission to lead the movement to use the power of money to invest, advocate and campaign for a future worth retiring into.  The company has proven that purpose-led super can shake up an industry, shift narratives, and build power.

The summit was designed to challenge employees to think about Futureproofing Our Movement – it was about defining scaling impact, not just in terms of size, but in terms of influence, strategy, and collective movement-building.

In the opening remarks, Future Group emphasised the need to create systemic change. But achieving that requires more than just corporate commitment; it requires a rallying of voices, talents, and capital to drive real progress. Power in Numbers is an acknowledgment that collective efforts, combined with clear and consistent action, have the potential to make the next decade of climate action even bolder.

    The Power of Education

The Climate Fresk workshop is a fun, educational experience that aims to help participants understand the complexities of climate change and its wide-ranging impacts. It is based on climate science and focuses on how various human activities and natural systems are interconnected in driving global warming.

By educating employees about the science behind climate change and the systemic changes needed, the Future Group took a critical step in ensuring that each person within the organisation understands and actively supports the company’s values and mission.

This is crucial in a time where the complexities of climate change can feel daunting. Understanding the issue at a deeper level empowers individuals to take actionable steps—whether it’s reducing personal carbon footprints, advocating for more sustainable business practices, or contributing to larger community efforts. To take action and build solutions, we first need to understand the problem. Companies embedding climate education into the workplace are doing more than raising awareness—they’re cultivating a culture of action, where every employee is empowered to be a change-maker.

    Collective Action Drives Change

Each employee brings something unique to the table—whether it’s expertise in finance, marketing, technology, human resources or other. Power in Numbers means harnessing these diverse skills and perspectives to advance a shared mission. It also means harnessing collective financial strength to shift markets, accelerate climate solutions, and drive systemic change. The result is a company that doesn’t just talk about sustainability but actively integrates it into every aspect of its operations and culture.

A Call to Action for Companies

Companies must actively educate their employees, align their mission with sustainable practices, and create an environment where collective action is the driving force behind change.

Integrating climate education into corporate culture is not just an ethical imperative – it’s a strategic one. The world is watching as businesses face increasing pressure from consumers, regulators, and stakeholders to address climate change. The companies that will thrive in the future are those that foster a culture of innovation and leadership, and scale their impact by leveraging the power of workforce and the power of consumers. It’s about creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the walls of any single organisation. By aligning our voices, our capital, and our mission, we become more than just a group of individuals- we become a force for change, one that can help transform the world in ways we’ve yet to imagine.

The next decade is crucial. It’s a time when decisive action must be taken to reduce global emissions from greenhouse gasses. And as Future Group’s summit and Climate Fresk workshop showed, the power to drive that change lies in our collective hands.

People For Nature empowers your people to create positive change for nature

    Embedding Climate Literacy in Banking

    The Bank Australia Approach

Bank Australia is a customer-owned bank with a strong commitment to social and environmental impact. With 70% of its customers prioritizing climate action, the bank is committed to aligning its operations with a sustainable future. As part of its broader purpose, the organisation has been actively integrating climate and biodiversity considerations into its operations, strategy, and decision-making.

To empower its people to navigate the complexities of climate change, and to embed climate awareness into the bank’s culture, Bank Australia has engaged in climate literacy and systems thinking initiatives that help employees better understand the links between finance, nature, and long-term risk.

Through interactive learning experiences, staff are encouraged to explore how climate science connects to their roles and how their decisions can contribute to more sustainable outcomes.

“I recently had the opportunity to attend the Climate Fresk workshop at our Bank Australia Collingwood head office moderated by Bruce M. from People For Nature, and it was a really good reminder of just how imminent and interconnected the impacts of climate change are.

The session breaks down complex climate science in a clear, practical way and helps put the bigger picture into perspective. It resets and prompts you to keep climate awareness still at the front of mind and not lose it in the noise around.

What I appreciated most was how the conversation stayed grounded and it wasn’t overwhelming, instead, it was a chance to pause, reflect, and rethink how our everyday choices and work connect to broader climate outcomes

It also aligned nicely with Bank Australia’s Climate Action Strategy focus, encouraging shared responsibility and practical thinking rather than grand gestures.

Also, a small fun fact I learned along the way: “Fresk” is an English adaptation of the French word “fresque”, meaning a fresco or mural which feels fitting, as the session is all about stepping back and seeing the whole picture.”

Minisha Reddy, Impact Lending Support Consultant at Bank Australia.

By investing in climate education, Bank Australia is strengthening internal awareness, aligning its workforce with its values, and building the capability needed to support Australia’s transition to a low-carbon, nature-positive economy.

This approach reflects a growing recognition that informed employees are key to driving meaningful, organisation-wide change. It also positions Bank Australia as a leader in sustainable finance, earning recognition from customers for its authentic commitment to climate action.

    Our Partnership with Mott MacDonald

As we reflect on 2025, we are pleased to acknowledge and celebrate our partnership with Mott MacDonald — an organisation working at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure, engineering, and systems transformation.

Mott MacDonald is an employee-owned engineering and management consultancy with over 20,000 people in more than 50 countries. These teams design, deliver, and maintain infrastructure that connects communities, supports sustainable economic growth, and builds environmental resilience.

Mott MacDonald aims to make a positive difference by delivering sustainable outcomes through its activities and to continuously improve its performance. The teams are committed to collaborating with broader communities to establish actions and make business decisions that consider the climate, environmental, and social aspects of their work.

Their support of AlterCOP 30 Australia – the Australian AlterCOP Chapter brought to Australia by People For Nature in 2025 – reflects this commitment to positive change across buildings and infrastructure, and to engaging with initiatives that bring people closer to climate and nature solutions.

We designed an independent, values-driven gathering running alongside the official United Nations Climate Conference (COP30).

As Riya Tailor, Senior Sciences Engineer and BMS Coordinator – QLD & SAN, at Mott MacDonald shared:

“AlterCOP 30 Australia closely aligned with Mott MacDonald’s commitment to positive change in buildings and infrastructure. Engaging with People For Nature allowed our colleagues, both speakers and attendees, to feel inspired to drive environmental change in their work and personal lives. The event provided valuable insights that will inform future decisions, strengthen our role in creating sustainable places, and inspire ongoing action across the communities and projects we support.”

Alongside this partnership, People For Nature focused on citizen engagement, biodiversity literacy, and participatory learning experiences — helping translate complex climate information into accessible formats that inspire understanding and action.

Together, this collaboration helped strengthen the foundations for what has now evolved into Citizen COP Australia — a decentralised, people-powered movement running alongside global COPs in 2026, designed to make climate and biodiversity action more locally grounded, inclusive, and participatory.

We are deeply grateful to Mott MacDonald for their engagement in 2025. Their commitment to sustainable infrastructure and systems thinking plays an important role in shaping resilient futures, and we look forward to continuing to build connections between engineering, community, and citizen action.

  • People For Nature’s sponsorship philosophy

    People For Nature’s sponsorship philosophy

At People For Nature, partnerships matter deeply.

As a charity working at the intersection of climate science, biodiversity, and collective intelligence, we are intentional about who we partner with and how we work together. Sponsorships are not simply a funding mechanism for us — they are a shared commitment to integrity, impact, and long-term systems change.

This is why we’ve developed a clear Sponsorship Philosophy to guide our work and ensure our partnerships serve people, nature, and the public good.

    Partnerships, Not Transactions

We believe sponsorships should go beyond logos and visibility. At their best, they are purpose-driven partnerships that enable meaningful action, learning, and impact.

    Our sponsorships are designed to:

    • deliver tangible outcomes for biodiversity conservation and climate education,
    • strengthen climate and nature literacy within organisations,
    • support citizen-led and place-based initiatives,
    • and contribute to a more equitable and regenerative future.

This approach helps ensure that our work — and the work of our partners — creates lasting value well beyond a single campaign or event.

Our Role: Translating Science Into Action

People For Nature exists to make complex environmental science accessible, engaging, and actionable.

Grounded in authoritative research and inspired by participatory learning approaches such as the Climate Fresk, our workshops and programs use collective intelligence to help people:

    • understand the science behind climate change and biodiversity loss,
    • explore systemic risks and interconnections,
    • engage in informed dialogue,
    • and identify meaningful pathways for action.

Through sponsorship partnerships, we scale this work responsibly — supporting education, community empowerment, and long-term resilience across Australia.

What We Look For in Partners

We partner with organisations that demonstrate:

    • a genuine commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility,
    • openness to learning, reflection, and transformation,
    • respect for evidence-based decision-making,
    • a desire to engage their people meaningfully on climate and nature,
    • and an ambition to contribute to measurable, real-world impact.

Alignment of values, intent, and impact ambition is essential. When alignment is strong, partnerships are more effective, credible, and enduring.

    Our Ethical Boundaries

    Integrity is non-negotiable.

Guided by the EIANZ Code of Ethics and our charitable purpose, People For Nature does not engage in sponsorships with organisations whose core activities conflict with our environmental mission.

    This includes activities that:

    • drive fossil fuel extraction or expansion,
    • contribute to deforestation or biodiversity destruction,
    • undermine climate science or environmental protections.

We reserve the right to decline or conclude partnerships that compromise our independence, credibility, or public trust.

    How We Design Our Partnerships

Every sponsorship partnership is intentionally designed.

    Our approach is:

    • Impact-led — tied to clear outcomes in education, conservation, and community empowerment,
    • Transparent — with defined scope, expectations, and review points,
    • Collaborative — co-designed where appropriate, without compromising independence,
    • Balanced — recognition and visibility are proportionate and secondary to impact.

This ensures partnerships remain grounded in substance, not symbolism.

    Accountability and Honest Reporting

We are committed to clear, honest communication with our partners and broader community.

Depending on the partnership, this may include:

    • annual impact and insights briefings,
    • program-level reporting,
    • qualitative and quantitative outcomes,
    • lessons learned — including what didn’t work.

We believe credibility comes from reporting reality, not just success stories.

    Our Commitment

In every partnership, People For Nature commits to:

    • acting with integrity, independence, and care,
    • stewarding funds responsibly and transparently,
    • prioritising people and nature over growth or branding,
    • maintaining public trust in our work.

We seek partners who see sponsorship not as visibility, but as shared stewardship — a chance to contribute to a thriving future for people and the planet.

    Our Partners

This philosophy is not theoretical — it is reflected in the organisations we already work with.

Our current partners include values-aligned organisations across climate education, biodiversity, business, and community sectors who share our commitment to integrity, evidence-based action, and long-term impact. They engage with us not for visibility alone, but to meaningfully support climate and nature literacy, empower people, and contribute to systemic change.

We are proud to collaborate with partners who:

    • invest in learning and capability-building,
    • respect scientific evidence and collective intelligence,
    • support citizen-led and place-based action,
    • and are willing to lead with integrity.

  • Inaugural AlterCOP 30 Australia climate summit mobilises more than 1,400 people across 42 events nationwide

Inaugural AlterCOP 30 Australia climate summit mobilises more than 1,400 people across 42 events nationwide

Volunteer-powered, free & inclusive grassroots climate conference showcased local innovations and action

AlterCOP 30 Australia has concluded after four powerful days of community-led climate action, bringing together more than 1,400 registered participants across 42 events nationwide.

Running in parallel to the UN COP30 summit in Brazil, AlterCOP 30 Australia offered a platform for inclusive, locally grounded conversations on climate change, biodiversity, sustainable cities, health, and community resilience, fostering hope, connection and tangible pathways to action.

Audrey Barucchi, CEO and Co-Founder of Australian charitable social enterprise, People For Nature, commented

AlterCOP 30 Australia has shown what’s possible when citizens are empowered to lead.

This wasn’t just a climate conference, it was a nationwide movement demonstrating that climate action is happening now, led by everyday people who care deeply about the future of our planet.

The energy we witnessed in Brisbane and across our satellite events was extraordinary. From packed workshops to meaningful conversations and new collaborations, AlterCOP 30 Australia has strengthened Australia’s grassroots climate ecosystem and proven that people-powered solutions are essential to driving real change.

We know there were close to 500 Australian delegates at COP30 in Brazil, carryinga considerable logistical and carbon-footprint burden. On the flipside, our citizen-powered events brought together 1,400 people locally with near to no budget and a minimal environmental footprint.

As a local extension of the Green Zone (without the heavy footprint), we enabled everyday Australians to engage with climate dialogue and innovation without having to travel across the world.

    In partnership with AlterCOP

AlterCOP was co-founded in 2024 by The Matcha Initiative and The Transmutation Principle in Singapore, as an accessible alternative to the United Nations COP, making climate action discussions available to communities, professionals, and youth. This year, the summit expanded to 12 new countries, including Australia, highlighting the enthusiasm around the region for inclusive, locally grounded climate dialogue.

Anne Langourieux and Thibaut Meurgue-Guyard, co-founders of AlterCOP, commented: “It’s amazing and exciting to see AlterCOP grow. It proves that a global, community-led movement for climate action is not just possible, it’s thriving. We’re committed to our mission of making climate dialogue accessible to regional communities without air travel while raising awareness of the official COP summit. We look forward to growing the movement to be even bigger next year.”

    Audrey Barucchi concluded:

“People For Nature is proud to have helped activate a community-powered space that builds engagement, showcases real solutions, and connects Australians to the global climate conversation.

“Australia may have lost the opportunity to host COP31, but this hasn’t diminished our ambition. Instead, we’re planning to grow AlterCOP next year. Our vision is to include more cities, more local communities, and deeper citizen-led climate engagement across Australia. in 2026 and beyond”

Powered by volunteers, grounded in community, and radiating active hope for Australia’s climate and nature movement, AlterCOP showed what happens when citizens lead with purpose and imagination.

AlterCOP 30 Australia — By the Numbers

    📍 42 events nationwide
    🌅 10+ Sunrise Actions
    👥 1,400+ participants registered

A main 4-day gathering in Brisbane, with major satellite events in Sydney and Melbourne, and additional events in Huon Valley (TAS), Bright (VIC), Wollongong, Newcastle, and Narara (NSW)

🤝 33 on-site volunteers in Brisbane, and 37+ more supporting events across the country.
💡 A core team of 15 volunteers driving the entire program across Brisbane and the satellite cities.

🌏 A Giant Climate Fresk reaching at least 200 participants across 8 locations in Australia and New Zealand — supported by 25+ facilitators.

🎤 85 speakers in Brisbane alone, and well over 100 nationally
🏛️ 49 organisations backing this movement — 15 partners and an ecosystem of 34 collaborations.

How We Shaped The Program in 2025

Our work was structured around five core working groups:

    🌡 Climate

    🌿 Biodiversity

    🏙 Sustainable Cities

    🧠 Health

    🧒 Youth

Through strong collaborations with organisations and communities across the country, these working groups didn’t just shape the main Brisbane program — they also enabled satellite events nationwide, all running in parallel with the same overarching agenda.

Each local hub explored the same themes through its own community lens, grounding the discussions in local realities, challenges, and opportunities. This meant that whether people gathered in Sydney, Melbourne, Huon Valley, Bright, Wollongong, Newcastle, or Narara, they contributed to a unified national conversation while elevating the unique stories and solutions of their region.

These groups didn’t just curate sessions — they embedded the values that make AlterCOP what it is: collaborative, community-led, and rooted in both science and lived experience.

Why we loved delivering the first AlterCOP in Australia?

    • Inclusive: ensured First Nations perspectives and Youth voices were present on every panel.
    • Citizen-powered: designed, led, and delivered entirely by volunteers.
    • Events that walk the talk: no flights, no waste, and only vegetarian catering
    • Free and independent: open to all, without corporate influence or paywalls.
    • A local extension of the Green Zone: including live interviews and videos with delegates who are on the ground at COPs to share insights on the proceedings.
    • Positive and solutions-focused: grounded in science, driven by active hope, and inspired by community action.

A big thank you to the people and organisations who believed in AlterCOP from day one — especially our partners who supported us with the simple, practical logistics that make an event like this actually work. Your trust and collaboration truly mattered.

Building a climate-first workforce  at VSL Australia

    Creating sustainability champions internally

VSL Australia has put sustainability at the centre of its operations,  and has a big focus on educating and empowering its workforce.

Internally driven by Jonathan Handschuh, one of our Ambassadors, VSL has run countless Climate Fresk workshops, helping its teams understand climate science and how they play a part in creating a better future.

The organisation has now moved into the next phase of climate education, running Biodiversity Collage workshops. This is deepening understanding, building further engagement and accelerating climate action.

    Program Objectives

VSL Australia has set an ambitious climate action plan. To deliver on it, employees need to be engaged and understand the role they can play in achieving its goals. By building climate literacy and fostering awareness of the challenges, people can see how their actions contribute to a more sustainable future.

    Impact & Feedback

“Rolling out Climate Fresk workshops across the organisation has helped mobilise our teams. When people connect emotionally with climate facts, their actions become more meaningful and impactful.  And the impact extends beyond the workplace: when people connect the dots they drive positive change in their personal lives as well.”

  • Why People For Nature is proud to be a member of SECNA

Why People For Nature is proud to be a member of SECNA

At People For Nature, we’re all about empowering people — individuals and communities alike — to take meaningful action on climate and biodiversity. But what makes us a bit different is how we operate: not just as a registered environmental charity, but also as a social enterprise. This means we blend the heart and purpose of a charity with the creativity and sustainability of a business.

    What’s a Social Enterprise, Anyway?

Simply put, a social enterprise is a business set up to solve social or environmental problems. Instead of focusing on making profits for shareholders, it reinvests any money earned back into its mission. The Social Enterprise Council of NSW & ACT (SECNA) describes it as a business that trades to create positive change — both for people and the planet.

Social enterprises sit at this really exciting crossroads of doing good while staying financially sustainable. They’re not just charities relying on donations, and they’re not just businesses chasing profit. They’re something fresh — combining the best of both worlds to make a real difference.

Why Environmental and Social Work Go Hand in Hand

We truly believe that environmental issues are human issues. Some might say the environmental crisis is, at its core, a human crisis. When ecosystems suffer, people do too — especially vulnerable communities. Climate change and biodiversity loss affect people’s health, wellbeing, and livelihoods. That’s why at People For Nature, we see environmental care and social justice as inseparable.

By supporting nature, we’re supporting communities, and by empowering people, we’re protecting nature. It’s all deeply connected.

People For Nature: A Social Enterprise With a Charitable Heart

We’re proud to wear two hats:

    • Registered Environmental Charity: We’re officially recognised for our work benefiting the public, which means your donations are tax-deductible. We’re committed to being open, honest, and accountable in everything we do.
    • Social Enterprise: We also run educational workshops, corporate training, and community programs that generate income. This earned revenue helps us grow our impact and stay financially strong — all without losing sight of our environmental mission.

    Why We Joined SECNA

SECNA is more than just an organisation — it’s a thriving community of changemakers who believe business can be a powerful force for environmental and social good. Being part of SECNA means we’re connected to:

    • Other nature-focused social enterprises like ours, helping each other thrive
    • Advocates pushing for policies that support and grow social and nature enterprises
    • A network of passionate people bridging business, environment, and community sectors

Being a SECNA member makes us stronger. It helps us blend smart business skills with deep care for nature. Because we know that solving climate and biodiversity challenges means finding new, creative ways that are both impactful and sustainable in the long run.

  • We’re part of Containers for Change in QLD and WA

We’re part of Containers for Change in QLD and WA

We’re excited to share that People For Nature is now a proud member of the Containers for Change scheme across Queensland and Western Australia!

This means that anyone returning eligible drink containers in these states can choose to donate their 10-cent refund directly to our charity — helping us educate, empower, and reconnect communities with nature.

🌿 What Is Containers for Change?

Containers for Change is a state-run container refund program that aims to reduce litter and increase recycling by offering a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned.

    The scheme currently operates in:

By encouraging individuals to recycle thoughtfully, the program not only reduces waste and conserves resources — it also provides an opportunity to support local charities and community groups.

    💚 Why It Matters

Australians use over 13 billion drink containers each year. A large portion ends up in landfill or as litter, particularly in waterways and natural environments, where they can take hundreds of years to break down and cause harm to wildlife and ecosystems.

Programs like Containers for Change help:

    • Reduce waste and pollution
    • Keep litter out of nature
    • Encourage a circular economy
    • Support local charities and community causes

And the best part? You can choose to support People For Nature with your refund.

    Your donation can help fund:

    • Free climate and biodiversity workshops
    • Community education programs
    • Citizen science and nature-based action projects

    🧃 How You Can Help

    It’s simple:

    1. Collect eligible drink containers – typically aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard containers between 150ml and 3L.
    2. Return them to a refund point in QLD or WA.
    3. Enter our Scheme ID to donate your refund to People For Nature:
      • QLD Scheme ID: C11593214
      • WA Scheme ID: C11593239

Each 10-cent refund adds up — and contributes to a healthier planet and a stronger community movement.

🌏 Good for Nature, Good for You

Taking part in Containers for Change isn’t just an act of recycling — it’s an act of regeneration.

By taking responsibility for the waste we create, we reduce our environmental footprint, shift towards sustainable behaviours, and support the kinds of solutions we need to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

Let’s turn waste into action — one container at a time.

Thank you for standing with us for nature. 🌿

By partnering with Biodiversity Collage, we are not only expanding our reach but also strengthening our ability to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The connection between People For Nature and Biodiversity Collage runs deep. As an educational tool, Biodiversity Collage uses collective intelligence to break down complex scientific concepts and make them easily understandable for all. Originating in France, this innovative approach to biodiversity education has quickly gained global recognition, and we are thrilled to introduce this powerful tool to Australians.

    The Power of Biodiversity Collage

Biodiversity Collage is more than just a workshop; it’s an immersive experience that transforms participants’ understanding of the world’s biodiversity and the interconnectedness of life on Earth.

Through the Collage experience, participants engage in a creative and interactive session where they piece together the complex puzzle of biodiversity—learning about ecosystems, species, and their relationships to one another. It encourages a deep understanding of the environmental issues we face and inspires people to take action at the individual, professional, and community levels.

Biodiversity: Everywhere, for Everyone, by Everyone.

The success of Biodiversity Collage worldwide speaks volumes about its potential to inspire real change. By providing participants with the tools to understand biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it, the program fosters a sense of agency and responsibility that drives positive action.

A Global Partnership for Local Impact

By joining forces with Biodiversity Collage, People For Nature can now offer Australians access to this highly effective educational tool. Our shared goal is to bring the lessons of Biodiversity Collage to local communities across the country, empowering Australians with the knowledge they need to protect the unique ecosystems that sustain life in this beautiful country.

The collaboration between our two organisations is not only about sharing resources but also about learning from each other.

With Biodiversity Collage’s experience in engaging audiences globally, and People For Nature’s deep connection to local conservation issues in Australia, we are poised to create a synergy that will benefit communities on both sides of the world.

This partnership also opens up exciting possibilities for future projects, combining the strengths of both initiatives to expand the reach of biodiversity education and increase global participation in conservation efforts.

    Why This Collaboration Matters

Australia is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, home to thousands of species found nowhere else in the world. From the Great Barrier Reef to the unique rainforests of Tasmania, the natural treasures of Australia are a fundamental part of the country’s identity. However, they are increasingly under threat from climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, and human activities. The urgency to address these challenges has never been greater.

At People For Nature, we are deeply committed to educating Australians about the value of biodiversity and the steps we must take to protect it. By collaborating with Biodiversity Collage, we now have the opportunity to bring cutting-edge educational tools to our communities, helping to ensure that the next generation of Australians understands the importance of preserving the environment and the role they can play in its protection.

Together, we can transform the way people perceive biodiversity and inspire a global movement that places conservation at the forefront of public discourse.

    Our Vision

A society where everyone can make a tangible contribution, and biodiversity is central to every decision.

A Shared Vision for the Future

This partnership is not just about education; it’s about creating lasting change. As the sixth mass extinction accelerates, the need for urgent action has never been more pressing. To address this crisis, we need to engage and mobilise people from all walks of life. From young students to business leaders, from rural communities to urban dwellers, everyone has a role to play in ensuring the survival of our planet’s biodiversity.

Through the power of education, collaboration, and community engagement, People For Nature and Biodiversity Collage aim to inspire a generation of global citizens who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to protect the natural world. Whether through hands-on workshops, immersive learning experiences, or community-led conservation initiatives, we are committed to empowering people to take meaningful action in the fight to save biodiversity.

We invite you to join us in this exciting journey—whether by participating in a Biodiversity Collage workshop, sharing your knowledge with others, or taking part in a citizen conservation project. Together, we can make a difference, and together, we can help ensure that the beauty and diversity of our planet is protected for future generations.

Let’s connect the world to nature—one Collage at a time.
